Bicycle Tasmania in the newspaper

Bicycle Tasmania’s Hobart ‘missing links’ wishlist got into The Mercury on Monday 7 January. Hopefully the wishlist makes it in to the Budget as well! Thanks to The Mercury for the following article.

Call to fix missing links
GREATER funding of bicycle infrastructure is needed to fill in “missing links” in Hobart’s transport network, says Bicycle Tasmania.
The advocacy group has written a wishlist for 2013 which includes the Battery Point walkway and the Sandy Bay cycleway.

The call comes after Hobart alderman Helen Burnett highlighted Hobart City Council’s paltry contribution to cycling, which is about 1/40th the national average of other capital city councils.
Bicycle Tasmania wants this year’s priorities to include better links between the Hobart Rivulet Track and the city and improvements to trails in Glenorchy and Kingston.
Spokeswoman Emma Pharo said ensuring the city’s bike paths link up properly was an important step to getting more people out of cars and on to bikes.
“These missing links are important because research shows that if any part of a trip is high stress then people won’t do it — particularly if it’s a kid trying to get to school,” she said.
“It’s really important some of these missing links get built.
“For example, at the moment people get to the end of the intercity cycleway and are really confused about where to go.”
She said planning on many of the sections was complete.
“Hobart City Council and Glenorchy City Council have used the infrastructure money available for the feasibility studies and now they just need to get them built,” she said.
Ms Pharo said getting more people walking and cycling was one solution to the obesity crisis facing Tasmania.
Cycleway wishlist
Bicycle Tasmania’s priorities:
• Building the missing connector along Collins St in Hobart to connect the CBD and waterfront with South Hobart off-road trail.
• Connecting Humphreys Rivulet with Glenorchy central to avoid the narrow and busy roads in the area with a trail servicing schools.
• Construction of the missing boardwalk section between Riawena Rd and Rose Bay High overpass (design and costings done).
• Extending the intercity cycleway between Bilton Rd at Claremont to Austins Ferry.
• Filling in the missing section of path on Patriarch Drive at Kingston and the Coffee Creek Trail and Huntingfield Ave shared path.
• Whitewater Creek Trail link — Spring Farm Rd to Antarctic Division along Channel Highway 4 on the Intercity Tasman Highway path.
• Clarence Foreshore Trail — Tranmere Foreshore.
• Kangaroo Bay Rivulet Track — Gordons Hill Rd to Rosny Hill Rd.
• Complete missing section of Bridgewater to Pontville Pathway between Brighton bypass roundabout and Brighton township alongside old Midland Highway.
