Bike Tas member Warren sent these photos from Barcelona. The cycle path is located in the middle of a main road and has it’s own traffic lights.

The rubber dividers were very effective in separating cars from bikes. They are big enough that you wouldn’t want to go over them at speed in a car, but can be navigated around at low speed. The rubber blocks sound like a good idea we could adopt in Tassie!

Now is the time to be contacting your local council to lobby for improvement to bike facilities. There is $1.5M up for grabs through the Safer Roads: Vulnerable Road Users Program for local councils. Applications due June 7th. Calling your council may well help them prioritise this and get in a good application. The deadline is tight already, but most councils will have bike projects in various forms of development that can be brought forward.

Kingston Shopping Centre

A short walk around Kingston’s Channel Court found a lot of construction and fenced off areas but only 1 bike parking spot:

Freeman Street down the side of Channel Court has painted bike lanes.

The bike lanes continue around the Freeman Street / Channel Highway roundabout, but they’re almost worn off.

Bit of a repaint needed please, Kingborough Council.

The bike lanes continue along Channel Highway for a bit but stop after the traffic lights here.

There is a bit of bike parking near Coles,

The bike lanes start up again near the Channel Highway / Beach Road intersection. I wonder why they are missing for that middle bit of the Channel Highway shopping strip?

Pedalling Postman at Seven Mile Beach

Thanks to The Mercury’s Saturday magazine and reporter Tim Martain for the story of Seven Mile Beach bike riding postman, Mike.
Mike says “It keeps me fit. I used to be about 120kg and now I’m 85kg.
Being a contractor I’m allowed to do it whatever way I please, and since it’s all so flat here it’s ideal for riding a bike.”
Mike’s round takes in all of Acton and Seven Mile Beach.
